Why Sarah Palin is resigning

Politics, U.S. Law and Policy No Comments

Dear MoveOn member,

Well, now we know why Sarah Palin is quitting as governor of Alaska.

In an op-ed in today’s Washington Post, she announced her new focus: killing our chance to build a clean energy economy, starting with the energy bill currently in Congress.1

Her op-ed is a marvel of misinformation and outright lies. Just like conservatives in Congress, Palin is trotting out the “energy taxes” scare tactic, and arguing instead for more drilling and more dirty coal. This bill already has too many giveaways to Big Coal and Big Oil, but that’s still not enough for Palin.2

As ridiculous as Sarah Palin’s lies are, they’re getting attention, and they’re a real threat to clean energy. If we can raise enough money today, we’ll run a rapid response ad to counter these lies and stop Palin’s attack. Can you donate $20?

This is the same Sarah Palin who doesn’t believe climate change is caused by humans.3 The same Sarah Palin who is obsessed with drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. And the same Sarah Palin who’s looking for controversial issues to launch a 2012 presidential bid.

Now she’s positioning herself as the face of the conservative attack against clean energy, against the Clean Air Act—even against the creation of millions of new jobs in solar and wind.4

But wind and solar create more than twice as many jobs as coal and oil.5 Clean energy is the only way to make America’s economy competitive in the 21st century.

The truth is we need a stronger energy bill in the Senate to combat our economic and climate crisis, but Sarah Palin’s lies could sink our hopes for a clean energy economy. Chip in $20 to fight back against Palin’s false claims:

The U.S. Chamber’s very bad lobbying day.

Politics, U.S. Law and Policy No Comments

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce really stepped in it yesterday.

The multi-million dollar corporate group flew in hundreds of CEOs and
other businesspeople to pressure your senators into doing nothing to
help working people.  But boy, did it not go well for the U.S. Chamber.

Two of their priority senators both issued public statements after
meeting with the U.S. Chamber saying that they are open to debate on
labor law reform - exactly what the U.S. Chamber is fighting against.

Let’s seize this opportunity.  Write to your senators now and let them
know that they should stand with working people, not the greedy CEOs
represented by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

http://action.seiu.org/page/speakout/chamberlobbying

The U.S. Chamber is backed by some of the biggest corporations in
America.  Now they’re spending millions of dollars to stop corporations
from being held accountable.

Just yesterday the U.S. Chamber placed a newspaper ad in Washington, DC
riddled with lies, hypocrisy, and misconceptions about the Employee
Free Choice Act.  In short, they’re fighting to make sure only greedy
CEOs can have contracts - and that working people can’t.

But the U.S. Chamber’s CEO lobby day went so poorly that we a chance to
push back and make clear to the senate that working people need help -
and they need it now.

Send your message to the Senate now.

Thanks for all you do.

Introducing Judge Sonia Sotomayor:

Born and raised in a South Bronx public housing project to Puerto
Rican parents, Sotomayor has distinguished herself in academia, as a
big-city prosecutor, and as a leading figure on the federal bench. If
confirmed, Judge Sotomayor would start with more federal judicial
experience than any new Justice in 100 years.

First appointed to the Federal District Court by President George
H.W. Bush, and then elevated to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals by
President Bill Clinton, Judge Sotomayor is widely admired as one the
finest legal minds in America today. As a trail-blazing Latina whose
career has spanned nearly every aspect of the law, Judge Sotomayor will
show fidelity to the Constitution while bringing to the Court a common

Breaking news on health care

Health Care, Obama, U.S. Law and Policy 1 Comment

Dear MoveOn member,

Breaking news on health care: The Washington Post is now reporting that
insurance giant Blue Cross Blue Shield “is putting the finishing touches
on a public message campaign aimed at killing a key plank in Obama’s
reform platform.”1

The Huffington Post sums it up as “Insurers Planning on Double-Crossing
Obama.”2

We knew the insurance companies would eventually turn on the president,
but this is much sooner than expected. And they’re targeting the public
health insurance option–the crucial piece that will help cover everyone.
So we’re immediately launching a rapid-response campaign to go toe-to-toe
with Blue Cross Blue Shield and win quality health care for all
Americans.

We need to raise $150,000 in the next two days. It’s a lot, but we’ll need
every penny to take on Goliath. We’ll run ads, hold events, and work like
crazy to get the real truth out to voters. AND we’ll keep the pressure on
Congress to make sure they don’t get bullied into gutting the president’s
plan to guarantee health care coverage for everyone. Can you chip in
$20 right now to make it happen?

The public health insurance option is a key provision in Obama’s plan to
help cover all of us. It would finally give everyone the choice between
keeping our current insurance or switching to a new, high-quality public
plan. And under a public health insurance plan our premiums wouldn’t
subsidize CEO salaries or stockholder profits (or in this case, misleading
attack ads), so we’d all save a lot on health care costs.

Plus, if we had the choice of a public plan, private insurers would have
to lower rates and improve quality to compete, so they’re dead set against
it. Today’s news just confirms that fact.

In the past, Blue Cross Blue Shield has been sued for underpaying doctors
and fined for refusing to cover necessary medical treatments for their
customers.3 Now, with what watchdog group Media Matters calls a “desperate
attempt to deceive,”4 they’ve gone one step too far.

Can you chip in $20 to help stand against Blue Cross Blue Shield and
pass health care reform with a strong public option?

Barack Obama On Heathcare

Health Care, Obama, U.S. Law and Policy No Comments

Just landed in my inbox a letter from the president of the United States:
Pretty cool.

Good afternoon,

You are receiving this email because you signed up at WhiteHouse.gov. My staff and I plan to use these messages as a way to directly communicate about important issues and opportunities, and today I have some encouraging updates about health care reform.

The Vice President and I just met with leaders from the House of Representatives and received their commitment to pass a comprehensive health care reform bill by July 31.

We also have an unprecedented commitment from health care industry leaders, many of whom opposed health reform in the past. Monday, I met with some of these health care stakeholders, and they pledged to do their part to reduce the health care spending growth rate, saving more than two trillion dollars over the next ten years — around $2,500 for each American family. Then on Tuesday, leaders from some of America’s top companies came to the White House to showcase innovative ways to reduce health care costs by improving the health of their workers.

Now the House and Senate are beginning a critical debate that will determine the health of our nation’s economy and its families. This process should be transparent and inclusive and its product must drive down costs, assure quality and affordable health care for everyone, and guarantee all of us a choice of doctors and plans.

Reforming health care should also involve you. Think of other people who may want to stay up to date on health care reform and other national issues and tell them to join us here:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/EmailUpdates

Health care reform can’t come soon enough. We spend more on health care than any country, but families continue to struggle with skyrocketing premiums and nearly 46 million are without insurance entirely. It is a priority for the American people and a pillar of the new foundation we are seeking to build for our economy.

We’ll continue to keep you posted about this and other important issues.

Thank you,
Barack Obama

P.S. If you’d like to get more in-depth information about health reform and how you can participate, be sure to visit http://www.HealthReform.gov.

Not sure, but the way hat $2500 is worded may only break down to $250 per year per family. Not the Big reform I’m looking for, but getting every American Insured is what needs to happen.
Maybe with a $250 deductible along with more taxes taken out of our checks to pay for health care instead of being ok with borrowing more from other countries. We as Americans should start paying for the things we want and not using credit or other nations’ “goodwill” policies.
