Ken Lewis is on his way out at Bank of America. But not without one more parting gift from all of us.
Despite helping to drive us into one of the worst financial meltdowns in history, it’s been revealed that Bank of America plans to send Ken Lewis out the door with a $53.3 million pension on top of the hundreds of millions he’s already made during his failed tenure as CEO.
We’re the ones paying billions in tax dollars to bail out Bank of America for the mistakes Ken Lewis made. We shouldn’t let him take one more penny of our hard-earned money.
The Obama administration has appointed a ‘pay czar,’ Kenneth Feinberg, to make sure our tax dollars aren’t being used to pay outrageous earnings to bank CEOs.
Will you tell the pay czar to stop payment on the Ken Lewis bailout? http://seiu.org/stoppayment
SEIU Secretary Treasurer Anna Burger will be delivering a letter to Mr. Feinberg, asking him to withhold Lewis’ absurd compensation until Bank of America agrees to stop hurting our communities with reckless financial practices. But we want you, as a taxpayer, to sign on to the letter before we deliver it to Mr. Feinberg: http://seiu.org/stoppayment
The changes we’re asking for are simple - and they’re necessary to stop greedy banks from driving us toward another financial meltdown. Help make sure Ken Lewis doesn’t get another dime of our money until Bank of America cleans up its act.
Sign on to Anna Burger’s letter at http://seiu.org/stoppayment
Thanks,
John VanDeventer
SEIU.org
P.S. It’s not just Ken Lewis. CEOs at all the major banks are continuing to rake in millions, but they’ve done nothing to fix the problems that got us into this mess. Help us put them all on notice by signing the letter to pay czar Kenneth Feinberg.

Senator Teddy Kennedy passed away last night and our movement lost a hero. His leadership, his vision, and his passion will
never be forgotten.
As we grieve, we must honor his memory and re-dedicate ourselves to his fight. Right now, let’s listen to his words. Below
is a powerful video that lots of MoveOn members are passing around this morning:
Video of Teddy Kennedy

Tonight, please light a candle in your window to memorialize him.
Tomorrow, as Senator Kennedy said, “…the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall
never die.”
Tomorrow, let’s re-commit ourselves to achieving the thing that mattered most to him: Quality, affordable health care for
every single American.
Thank you for all you do.

Dear MoveOn member,
Congress is voting on the big energy bill next week. But the latest
version of the energy bill would repeal a key part of the Clean Air
Act1–arguably the most important environmental law in American history.
Big coal companies want to revoke President Obama’s authority to crack
down on global warming pollution from their dirty power plants–and
they’re on the verge of winning.
If they succeed, the oldest and dirtiest coal plants could keep destroying
the climate for years to come. And this change could pave the way for 100
new coal plants, which would pollute our communities with smog, soot,
mercury, and global warming pollution.2
The big vote is next week. Can you tell Congress not to repeal this Clean
Air Act provision? Clicking here will add your name:
http://pol.moveon.org/cleanairact/o.pl
The petition says: “Congress must not repeal the Clean Air Act provision
that empowers President Obama to crack down on dirty coal plants.”
How did this happen? For years, George W. Bush refused to use the Clean
Air Act to cut global warming pollution. But the Obama administration has
taken the first steps toward changing that, so the coal industry is
desperate to take away Obama’s authority to limit global warming
pollution. Now, coal lobbyists have forced a terrible provision into the
new energy bill–which otherwise has some good parts–to give coal plants
a pass.
If the coal industry wins, Obama would be powerless to stop hundreds of
old, dirty coal plants from spewing global warming pollution into our air.
Some of the biggest climate polluters on the planet would be let off the
hook.
Even worse, the coal industry is trying to build at least 100 more dirty
coal plants. For years, local environmental groups and the Sierra Club
have blocked these plants.3 But if this Clean Air Act provision is
eliminated, local groups may be unable to stop another generation of
dependence on dirty coal.
We got Congress’s attention in the last two weeks with a powerful
grassroots drive to fix this and other problems in the energy bill. We
made thousands of phone calls, wrote letters to local newspapers, and
delivered petition signatures in person to hundreds of congressional
offices. But we’re not there yet.
The clock is ticking down to the big vote next week, and we need to
protect the Clean Air Act. Can you click here to sign your name to the
petition?

A man in a hot air balloon realized he was lost. He
reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He descended a bit more and
shouted, “Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet
him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”
The
woman below replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon hovering
approximately 30 feet above the ground. You’re between 40 and 41
degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.”
“You must be an engineer,” said the balloonist.
“I am,” replied the woman, “How did you know?”
“Well,”
answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is, technically
correct, but I’ve no idea what to make of your information, and the
fact is I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help at all. If
anything, you’ve delayed my trip.”
The woman below responded, “You must be in Management.”
“I am,” replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?”
“Well,”
said the woman, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going.
You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You
made a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep, and you expect people
beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the
same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s my
fault.”

I just recorded a special video message — from a place you might
recognize — about this weekend’s Change is Coming house meetings, and
why you should join tens of thousands of your fellow supporters.
Watch the video and find a Change is Coming house meeting near you. Or
host one yourself and invite your friends, family, and neighbors:
http://my.barackobama.com/changeiscoming
At the house meetings, you’ll reflect on our campaign, discuss the
future of this movement, and identify some ways to get involved in your
community.
Meeting hosts will report back, and your feedback will be instrumental
in guiding this movement through some important and unprecedented
territory.
This grassroots organization has always been about more than an
election. It’s about transforming our country — and we’ve only just
begun.
With the enormous challenges we’re facing at home and abroad, we have
no choice but to continue working together. There’s so much more we can
do to help Barack bring change to America.
How we do that is up to you.
Watch the video and sign up to host or attend a house meeting this weekend:
http://my.barackobama.com/changeiscoming
I hope you’ll continue to make history with us.
Thanks and happy holidays,
David
